Some highligts of the conference:
  • school wide use of Covey's 7 effective habits for the successful student; students particularly like the first habit "Be proactive".
  • Greenbrier County will be piloting "Techademics" - allowing students to receive credit simultaneously for voc tech classes and academic classes when the standards are met for both. For instance an engineering class might cover the same standards as an algebra class; the student would receive credit for both.
  • College Foundation of WV -- http://cfwv.com/ -- "A free one stop shop for college and career planning"
  • Our school must have a vision before we can set any goals; strategic plans should have the vision, then the values and beliefs, then the goals. To get the school on board with any mental health goals that we have it might be useful to have a copy of the school's strategic plan.
  • http://www.lawv.net/Home/PublicWeb/FAST/index_html -- the web site for FAST (Family Advocacy, Support and Traiining); apparantly available in our area, this program through legal aid provides advocates for parents to help navigate the school and social services for children with any DSM-IV Axis I diagnosis. They specifically mentioned assisting parents in understanding IEPs and being active participants in their child's educational goals.
  • I have a video called "insideout"" which includes interviews with prisoners who present a message to youth to stay in school and get an education; they equate their dropping out with their ending up in prison; the poster that goes with the video states that 8 out of 10 high school drop outs end up in prison.
